One advertisement really can change your life – just ask Lisa Garcia how she found her alma mater. After seeing an ad for Florida Tech, she decided to sign up for more information. Her mentor, a local physician, encouraged her to pursue her degree, as she already had eight years of experience in the healthcare field and clerical support.
After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in healthcare management in 2013, she continued her Florida Tech journey with an MBA in healthcare management three years later, and can proudly call herself a Panther for life.
“I look forward to using what I’ve learned in my programs, as well as my experiences in support and leadership to propel my career further in the years to come,” Garcia said.
The degrees have already bolstered her career, giving her the chance to hold two leadership positions at healthcare organizations. She is considering pursuing her doctorate degree, and hopes to work in a senior management position someday.
Q. What were the most important factors in your decision to choose Florida Tech?
I chose Florida Tech from an ad! Interestingly, the ad and the website looked professional, the information displayed was helpful, and when I signed up for more information, a representative called me immediately and began walking me through the enrollment process.
Q. How will your Florida Tech degree make a difference in your career?
My degrees from Florida Tech have already augmented my career. I have held two leadership positions (one post-BA, and a recent one post-MBA) that have given me the opportunity to lead and grow teams of healthcare professionals in providing safe and effective healthcare. I look forward to using what I’ve learned in my programs, as well as my experiences in support and leadership, to propel my career further in the years to come!
Q. Do you have any future plans (education, career) now that you have your degree?
I have considered a doctorate, but am still on the fence as it will require at least a five-year commitment.
I will continue to grow in my current position, and begin looking toward applying for positions in senior leadership when I feel ready.
Q. What surprised you most about taking an online program?
I was surprised at how accommodating and efficient the online learning model was for me. I was apprehensive about time management at first, but the syllabi are clearly written, professors are always available to clarify assignments and expectations, and the online classroom forum allowed quick and easy communication with classmates.
Q. What was your favorite class and why?
During my BA program, I enjoyed healthcare law and my elective studies in humanities. During my MBA, the curriculum was much more streamlined and career-focused. I enjoyed Organizational Behavior.
Q. What was your most valuable takeaway from the program?
I learned a strong sense of collaboration and team building from my time with Florida Tech.
Q. What advice would you give other students who are considering enrolling in the program?
Don’t wait! Florida Tech is the perfect school to jump into. You’ll be greeted with assistance and support in all facets of the admission process, including which degree may be right for you, immediately.
Q. Who has been your support system?
My family and colleagues.
Q. What was the most challenging part of your student journey?
Taking two classes at a time during my BA. Though the format is easy to navigate, and there is support, online learning demands discipline and strict time management. During graduate level courses, advisors recommended taking only one class at a time, and I am glad they did!
Q. Who or what inspires you to succeed?
My father was with me for my BA graduation. He was so proud of my achievement. Sadly, he passed away less than a year later. I’ve dedicated my advanced degree and ongoing success to him. I know he would be so pleased to know how far I have come.
Q. What is one fun fact about you?
I can find humor in absolutely anything – I think I would have made a great comedian!
